step 1: start a blog

Check.

Remember how you used to always think about what you wanted to be when you grew up? And then you grew up, and you started working, and you never really "became" anything... (well, some of us, anyway.) It kind of always bothered me that I let that happen to myself, but I always had the excuses of "making ends meet" or "the company's depending on me" to prevent me from doing anything about it.

Then, my babies happened. Aside from being wonderful, they're pretty much the ultimate excuse for not doing anything cool. You want to take good care of them, so you need to make good money, and you want to spend lots of time with them, so any time off you have you're hanging out with the babies. It's pretty easy to get out of making any drastic changes to "fulfill your dreams" - you just don't have the time or money!

That was me, until I decided that time far outweighs money and I need to stay home with these kids! (Luckily, my husband agreed.) It was a good call. I've really loved (almost) every minute of it, and I wouldn't trade seeing my babies grow up for any amount of money. Interestingly, though, watching them grow up reminds me that I already did grow up, and it brings me back to that question: What do I want to be?

Obviously, I'm a mom, and that's the most important thing for now. But visions of great design keep dancing through my head, and now that I can't use any of my old excuses, I think I'll do something about it. Hence the blog. I hear that you pretty much have to have a blog if you want to sell anything these days (I've actually filled out two job applications that requested a blog address!), so in hopes that I'll one day be selling beautiful things to the public at large, here's my blog.

Putting the cart before the horse, you say? Maybe so. But seeing as how I know how to do this, and I don't really know how to do most of the other things involved in designing and selling things, I figured this was a good place to start. This way, anyone who happens to stumble across this blog can follow my journey and hopefully spread the word (when there's a word to spread).

As a final thought, let me direct you to Anna Maria Horner's site - for the moment, she's my inspiration: fabric and pattern designer, creative wonder, and mom of FIVE! Wow! Here's to hoping my site will one day look like hers! (What do you think about all those kids, hubby?)
